My Snowblower Starts but Dies When I Give It Gas — What's Wrong?
A snowblower that starts but stalls when the throttle opens may not be receiving enough fuel for the increased airflow. Restricted carburetor passages, stale fuel, a venting problem or an incorrect choke setting are possibilities; ignition faults or a heavy mechanical load can look similar. The exact moment it stalls helps separate them.

Does it stall with throttle or only while throwing snow?
Note whether the engine dies without the auger engaged, only when the drive engages, or only in deep snow. Stalling immediately with throttle suggests a different path from slowly bogging down in wet snow. Some engines run at governed speed rather than having a user-adjustable throttle. Do not adjust governor linkage or increase engine speed beyond the manual's setting.
Choke behavior offers a clue
If partial choke keeps it running after warm-up, the mixture may be too lean because of restricted fuel delivery or an air leak. That is evidence to investigate, not a long-term operating setting. Conversely, leaving the choke on after warm-up can make the engine run rich and stumble. Use the prescribed starting sequence before deciding the carburetor is at fault.
Fuel supply must keep up with demand
A dirty main circuit, restricted fuel filter where fitted, pinched line or tank vent fault can allow enough fuel for idle but not for work. Fresh gasoline does not dissolve every deposit. Do not loosen a fuel cap on a hot or running machine as a test. A technician can check flow and venting safely, then decide whether cleaning, a line repair or another correction is justified.
Not every stall is a carburetor problem
A plug or ignition component can fail under load or after warming up. An obstructed exhaust or dragging auger mechanism may also pull engine speed down. Shut the engine off, remove the key, disconnect the plug lead and isolate electric starting power before inspection as the manual requires. Never reach into the chute or auger; use the specified clearing tool after everything stops.
What to tell the repair shop
Record whether it restarts immediately, needs cooling time, smells strongly of fuel or runs only with choke. Stop operating if it surges severely, leaks, smokes unusually or makes grinding noises. Swedlund's serves equipment owners around Cologne and Waconia; call 612-816-8013 to arrange diagnosis. All equipment drop-offs and pickups are by appointment only. Please call ahead.
Reduce repeat stalling
Store fuel as instructed, keep the cooling and intake areas clear, and have recurring surging checked before the first major snowfall. Avoid repeatedly applying choke to force a poorly running engine through a job. If the engine runs normally but struggles only in heavy snow, reduce the forward pace and clearing width within the operator's guidance instead of altering governor settings.
