Why Won't My Snowblower Start After Sitting All Summer?
A snowblower that will not start after summer storage often has deteriorated fuel or deposits restricting the carburetor, but a closed fuel valve, incorrect starting procedure, worn plug or weak starting system can cause the same symptom. Check the simple items first; storage history is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Separate no-crank from crank-but-no-start
Does the engine turn normally, turn slowly, or not turn at all? A pull cord that will not move needs investigation rather than more force. For a turning engine, confirm the key, run switch, fuel shutoff, choke and primer settings in the model's manual. Too much priming can flood the engine. Never bypass a safety device to make it start.
Why fresh fuel may not be enough
Gasoline can lose starting quality during storage; moisture and deposits can also restrict small passages. Topping off an old tank does not remove contaminated fuel or clean a blocked jet. Follow the manufacturer's fuel and storage instructions. Work only with a cool engine outdoors, away from sparks, and use an approved container. Stop if there is a leak.
Carburetor, plug and fuel delivery checks
Running only briefly after priming may point toward fuel delivery, but it does not prove the carburetor needs replacement. A fouled plug, damaged fuel line or blocked tank vent can interfere too. With the engine off, key removed and ignition disabled as the manual directs, look for cracked hoses and a loose plug boot. Leave spark testing near fuel and carburetor disassembly to a trained technician.
Electric start is not always battery start
Some snowblowers use a plug-in electric starter, some use an onboard battery, and many have a recoil starter. Do not assume yours has a battery. Check the specified cord and outlet for a plug-in unit; never run it indoors. Battery-equipped models need the correct charger and battery condition check. Follow the starter duty cycle so repeated attempts do not overheat the motor.
When to schedule diagnosis
Repeated failed starts, fuel leaks, a locked engine or a unit that starts only with partial choke warrant professional diagnosis. Tell us its model, last successful use, fuel age and what happens during starting. At Swedlund's in Cologne, we can inspect the fuel and ignition systems before recommending parts. All equipment drop-offs and pickups are by appointment only. Please call ahead.
Prevent the same problem next fall
Use the fuel grade and ethanol limit specified for the engine. If a stabilizer is approved, add it while the fuel is fresh and follow its directions; it cannot restore already spoiled fuel. Use the manufacturer's drain-or-store procedure, protect the unit from moisture and service the starting system before winter. Keep the manual with the model and serial numbers so replacement parts are identified correctly.
