Why Is My Snowblower Auger Not Turning?
An auger that will not turn can result from a broken shear pin on models that use them, a slipping or broken belt, insufficient cable travel, an obstruction or an internal drive fault. One side not turning differs from both sides stopping. Before any inspection, shut the machine down and disable starting; an engine-off auger can still release stored force.

Disable the machine before looking closer
Release the controls, stop the engine, remove the key and wait for all movement to stop. Disconnect the spark-plug lead and isolate battery or plug-in starting power as your manual directs. Never put a hand or foot into an auger, impeller or discharge chute, even with the engine off. Use the manufacturer's cleanout tool, not your fingers, and stop if the obstruction cannot be removed safely.
One auger section versus the whole drive
On a two-stage machine, a damaged shear pin may let one auger section stop while the other still drives. If both sections stop, the belt, cable, engagement system or gearcase deserves attention too. Single-stage paddles and some other designs use different drive protection. Identify the model rather than assuming every snowblower uses the same pins or gearbox arrangement.
Use the specified shear fastener
A shear pin or bolt is a designed weak link where the manufacturer specifies one. Replacing it with an ordinary hardened bolt can transfer impact force into more expensive parts. After a strike, inspect for damage and use the exact specified part and installation method. Do not rotate the auger by hand to test it or reinstall a pin while the machine can start.
Belt and cable symptoms
A squeal, burning-rubber smell or intermittent movement can accompany belt slip, but those symptoms are not conclusive. An engagement cable can stretch, seize or lose travel. Adjusting it too tight can keep the auger engaged when released. Cover removal and tension settings must follow the service procedure; guards need to be reinstalled before operation. Never observe a running belt with its guard removed.
When a gearcase or bearing needs diagnosis
Grinding, leaking lubricant, a housing damaged by impact or repeated pin failures can point beyond a simple fastener. Do not continue testing under power. A shop can distinguish a seized bearing, damaged shaft and gearcase fault before recommending replacement. Bring the model number and describe any rock, ice or hidden-object strike. Pickup and delivery may be arranged where available; call ahead for all equipment movements.
Prevent damage before the next storm
Clear debris from the work area before snowfall, use the correct skid-shoe height for the surface, and avoid forcing packed ice through the housing. Keep approved spare shear pins if your model uses them. Check disengagement according to the operator's manual at the start of the season.
