Mower Battery Is Good but the Engine Won't Crank
Your battery tests at full voltage — maybe you even jumped it — but the mower still won't crank. This is a common and frustrating situation. A fully charged battery rules out the simplest cause, but there are several other components that can fail silently between the battery and the starter motor. Getting this wrong can mean chasing parts that don't fix the real problem.
Common Symptoms
- No click, no sound when you turn the key
- Single click but engine doesn't turn over
- Lights and accessories work but starter doesn't engage
- Battery measures 12+ volts but nothing happens when you turn the key
- Solenoid clicks but starter motor doesn't spin
Likely Causes
- Failed starter solenoid — clicks but doesn't send current to the starter
- Open safety switch — seat switch, blade engagement switch, or brake switch preventing start
- Bad ground connection between battery and chassis
- Corroded or loose battery terminals despite good voltage reading
- Failed starter motor — solenoid and switches are fine but motor is seized or burned
- Blown fuse in the starting circuit

- Battery load test (voltage alone doesn't tell the full story)
- All safety switches — seat, brake/clutch, PTO/blade
- Starter solenoid function under load
- Wiring harness condition and ground connections
- Starter motor function and draw
- Fuse block for starting circuit fuses
Professional Diagnosis
The starting circuit involves multiple interacting components. Replacing parts without diagnosis is expensive — a new starter motor won't help if the solenoid is the problem, and a new solenoid won't help if a safety switch is open.
