Mower or ATV Starts With a Jump but Won't Start on Its Own

When a machine starts fine with jumper cables but won't crank on its own, people usually replace the battery — sometimes multiple times. If the replacement battery also goes dead within a few sessions, the charging system is the real problem. The battery is just the messenger. Before replacing another battery, the charging system needs to be tested.

Common Symptoms

  • Machine starts fine jump-started but won't start on battery alone
  • Battery goes dead within a few uses after replacement
  • Battery reads low voltage even after the machine has run
  • Machine starts fine when battery is on a charger, dies when charger is removed

Likely Causes

  • Failed charging coil/stator — engine isn't producing power to recharge
  • Bad voltage regulator — not converting engine output to charge voltage
  • Wiring issue in the charging circuit
  • Parasitic drain from a shorted accessory or wiring fault
  • Battery that won't hold charge (but needs ruling out first)

What We Inspect

  • Charging voltage at battery while engine runs — should be 13–14V
  • Stator output (AC voltage from charging coil)
  • Voltage regulator function and output
  • Parasitic drain test — DC current with engine off
  • Battery load test to verify battery condition

Professional Diagnosis

The test that reveals a charging problem is measuring voltage at the battery terminals while the engine is running. A battery that charges while running but dies overnight has a parasitic drain. A battery that doesn't charge while running has a charging system problem. These require different repairs.
