A tune-up is not a promise to fix every symptom
Routine service may include an oil change on a four-stroke engine, plug inspection, lubrication and belt or control checks, depending on the model and agreed scope. It does not automatically include carburetor rebuilding, replacing a starter or repairing a gearbox. Describe symptoms when booking so a running machine needing maintenance is not confused with a machine needing diagnosis.
Why diagnosis has its own labor
A complaint such as 'starts then dies' can require checking fuel delivery, ignition and operation under load. Testing and safe access take time even if the failed part is small. Ask how diagnostic time is billed, what initial authorization covers and when the shop will contact you. A symptom description alone cannot establish the total repair price without inspecting the machine.
Parts, model and condition change the quote
A shear pin, engagement cable, drive belt and internal auger gear are different repair categories. Electric-start components, tracked drive systems and corroded fasteners can add complexity. Some parts are model-specific or have limited availability. The model and serial number help identify the correct parts, but a photograph cannot reveal every seized fastener or hidden impact injury.
Ask what the estimate includes
Clarify diagnostic labor, proposed repair labor, parts, applicable tax and any agreed pickup or delivery charge. Ask whether maintenance discovered during diagnosis is included or optional. If the inspection reveals another issue, agree on how further work will be authorized. Do not compare two totals until the scopes match; the cheaper number may describe substantially less work.
Repair versus replacement
Consider frame and housing condition, engine health, parts availability and how well the machine suits your property. A serviceable machine with one repairable fault is different from one with multiple major failures. We do not recommend an expensive assembly merely from a symptom. Ask for the findings and alternatives rather than using age alone as the decision rule.
