Why an ATV Starts but Won't Stay Running
An ATV that starts but immediately stalls, or runs for a few minutes then dies, is one of the most common complaints we see. The symptom narrows the diagnosis considerably — and it is almost never the battery.
What 'Starts then Stalls' Tells Us
An engine that starts but immediately dies usually has enough fuel to fire but not enough to sustain idle. That points directly to the fuel delivery system — carburetor, fuel valve (petcock), fuel filter, or a vacuum leak at the intake. An engine that runs for a few minutes then stalls as it warms up often has a heat-sensitive electrical problem or a failing choke circuit.
The Most Common Cause: Clogged Pilot Jet
The pilot jet — also called the idle jet — is a tiny brass fitting inside the carburetor that controls fuel delivery at low RPM. It has a very small orifice that clogs easily when fuel sits for more than a month. When this jet is partially blocked, the engine starts on the choke and dies the moment the choke is released. Cleaning or replacing the pilot jet solves this in most cases.
Vacuum Leaks and Intake Boots
Air leaking into the intake between the carburetor and the engine cylinder leans out the fuel mixture at idle. This can cause stalling at low RPM even if the carburetor itself is clean. The intake boot — a rubber coupling between the carburetor and the engine — cracks with age. Spraying a small amount of carb cleaner around the boot while the engine is running will cause a momentary RPM change if there is a leak.
When It is Electrical
Some ATVs have a heat-sensitive CDI ignition module that causes stalling after a few minutes of running. This is less common than fuel issues but worth checking if the carburetor comes back clean. The stall pattern — always at the same temperature, always after a similar amount of run time — is a giveaway.
Fuel Valve and Filter
A fuel petcock that is sticking or has a deteriorated diaphragm will deliver enough fuel to start but cut supply as demand increases. Same with a clogged fuel filter — fine at startup, starved under load. Both are simple to replace and often overlooked.
