ATV Carburetor Cleaning — What Proper Service Looks Like
Carburetor cleaner sprayed through the throat of a carburetor while it's still on the engine cleans the parts it directly contacts — but it doesn't reach the small jets, emulsion tubes, and passages where varnish deposits accumulate most heavily. A proper carburetor cleaning requires removal, disassembly, soaking, ultrasonic or chemical cleaning of all passages, and inspection of the float and needle before reassembly.
Common Symptoms
- Engine runs rich (black smoke, strong fuel smell, black plug)
- Engine runs lean (popping, overheating, surging at part throttle)
- Idle is rough or won't hold — requires constant choke
- Engine stumbles under acceleration
- Flooding — fuel running out of overflow tube
Likely Causes
- Plugged main jet from ethanol varnish
- Plugged pilot/slow jet affecting idle circuit
- Float set at wrong height — too high floods, too low starves
- Worn or stuck float needle allowing continuous fuel flow
- Clogged air bleeds and emulsion tubes in the carb body
What We Inspect
- All jets — main, pilot, and needle jets
- Float height and float for leaks or fuel contamination
- Float needle and seat for wear and sealing
- All air/fuel passages — emulsion tubes, air bleeds
- Choke plate and shaft for wear or binding
- Intake boot and gaskets for air leaks after reinstallation
