Zero-Turn Mower Pulls to One Side — Hydrostatic Drive Diagnosis

When a zero-turn mower drifts or pulls to one side even when both lap bars are held in the same position, the problem is almost always in the hydrostatic drive system — not the tires. Each side of a zero-turn is controlled by an independent hydrostatic transaxle, and when one side loses pressure, speed, or response, the mower won't track straight. This is a mechanical diagnosis problem, not something tire pressure will fix.

Common Symptoms

  • Mower veers left or right when both lap bars are in the same position
  • One side feels weak or less responsive than the other
  • Mower tracks straight on flat ground but pulls on hills
  • One lap bar requires more or less force than the other for the same speed
  • Machine circles or curves instead of going straight

Likely Causes

  • Hydrostatic transaxle on one side losing pressure or output
  • Drive belt slipping on one side — especially after belt replacement
  • Lap bar linkage out of adjustment on one side
  • Low hydrostatic fluid in one or both transaxles
  • Worn or damaged hydrostatic pump or motor
  • Air in the hydraulic system from recent fluid service

  • Lap bar neutral and tracking adjustment on both sides
  • Drive belt condition, tension, and routing on each side
  • Hydrostatic fluid level and condition
  • Transaxle response under load on each side independently
  • Hydrostatic pump and motor for internal wear or damage
  • Purge procedure to check for air in the hydraulic system

Professional Diagnosis

Hydrostatic drive systems require specific diagnosis to identify which component is failing. Adjusting the lap bars may mask the problem temporarily but won't fix a failing transaxle.
