Why Won't My Zero-Turn Mower Move on One Side?
When a zero-turn mower will not move on one side, possible causes include a bypass valve left in the towing position, a linkage fault, a drive-belt problem or a hydraulic-system issue. A failed pump or motor is only one possibility. Start with the machine's recent history and the manufacturer's checks rather than assuming an expensive hydrostatic assembly must be replaced.

Stop using it if steering becomes unpredictable
The independent drives are part of how a zero-turn steers, so one-sided failure is a control issue, not merely an inconvenience. Stop on level ground, disengage the PTO, apply the brake and shut off. Remove the key and disable starting before inspection. Do not test on a slope, tow it faster than allowed or crawl underneath without approved lifting and support. Hydraulic leaks can be hazardous under pressure.
Was it recently pushed, transported or serviced?
Many models have a separate bypass or release control for each drive to permit limited movement with the engine off. If one remains released, that side may not drive. Locate the controls and their normal position in the operator's manual; arrangements vary. Never force a lever or improvise an adjustment. A problem immediately after transport or service makes those details particularly useful to the technician.
Belts and linkage can imitate internal drive failure
A worn, displaced or damaged belt, failed tensioner, broken linkage or missing fastener can affect power delivery or control travel. Some layouts use a shared belt and others differ. With the engine off, inspect only what the manual allows without removing safety guards unnecessarily. Never run exposed belts to observe a fault. A control that moves at the handle does not prove the linkage moves correctly at the transmission.
Fluid concerns need the right procedure
Leaks, aeration, overheating and internal wear can reduce hydrostatic output, especially after warming up. Some transaxles are serviceable and some have different manufacturer restrictions. Do not add generic hydraulic fluid, open a hot reservoir or assume an external reservoir level tells the whole story. Never search for a pressure leak with your hand. Purging and diagnostic tests must follow the exact unit's service instructions.
Diagnosis before expensive replacement
Note whether the side is weak or completely dead, whether forward and reverse differ, and whether the problem appears cold or hot. A shop can inspect controls and mechanical drive before assessing hydraulic condition. Prevent recurrence with prescribed fluid service where applicable, clean cooling fans and correct operating practices. Call Swedlund's at 612-816-8013.
