Why Is My Snowmobile Drive Belt Slipping or Breaking?
A snowmobile belt can slip or break because it is worn, incorrectly specified, contaminated, overheated or operating with a clutch or alignment problem. Excessive load and improper operating conditions can add heat. Repeated failure calls for diagnosing the drive system, not simply installing another belt; the damaged belt's wear pattern is useful evidence.

Stop and preserve the evidence
A burning-rubber smell, sudden rev increase without acceleration or severe vibration is a reason to stop safely. Shut off, remove the key and disable starting before inspection, then let hot parts cool. Never reach into a running clutch or operate with its guard removed. Keep the failed belt and note when it happened: takeoff, deep snow, towing or a sustained climb can lead the diagnosis in different directions.
Correct specification matters
Width, length and construction must match the manufacturer's application. A belt that physically fits may still be wrong. Inspect for cracks, missing cogs, fraying and glazed surfaces using the wear limits in the manual. Follow any directional installation and break-in requirements for that belt and sled. Do not use an arbitrary deflection number from a different model or force the belt into place with damaging tools.
Heat may be a symptom of another fault
Oil, coolant or other contamination on clutch faces can reduce grip and build heat. Worn clutch components, incorrect alignment or a sticking mechanism can do the same. Cleaning must follow the service procedure and does not replace repairing a leak. Never oil a belt or clutch face. Clutch disassembly involves stored spring force; alignment and component service belong with properly equipped technicians.
Operating conditions and resistance
A frozen or obstructed track, overloaded towing or demanding starts can put unusual load on the drive. Follow the sled's warm-up, loading and operating guidance; do not try to free a stuck track with repeated high throttle. Cooling and ventilation paths also need to remain clear. If the belt keeps failing in normal use, operating advice alone is not enough: the system needs inspection.
Prevent repeated replacements
Record belt part number, approximate use, recent clutch work and whether failure began after a change. Inspection can distinguish an incorrect belt from contamination, bearing wear or a clutch problem before more parts are ordered.
