My Riding Mower Engine Runs Fine but It Won't Move — What's Wrong?

The engine starts, revs up normally, but the mower does not move. This is a frustrating symptom because the engine sounds healthy — but something between the engine and the wheels has failed.

First Check: The Bypass Valve

Most hydrostatic riding mowers have a bypass valve or freewheel control — a lever or rod that disengages the transmission for manual pushing. If this valve is stuck in the open (disengaged) position, the engine can run and spin perfectly but no power reaches the wheels. Check your owner's manual for the bypass valve location. It is usually a lever near the rear axle or a knob on the transmission.

Drive Belt Failure

A broken or slipped drive belt between the engine and the hydrostatic transmission will cause exactly this symptom. Unlike a slipping belt under load, a broken belt results in zero drive, full stop. The belt is usually accessible under the deck or with the seat removed. A glazed or cracked belt that has not broken yet will cause slipping under load — the mower moves on flat ground but loses drive uphill.

Hydrostatic Transmission Problems

If the belt is intact and the bypass valve is properly engaged, the problem is inside the transmission. Hydrostatic transmissions use hydraulic fluid to transfer engine power to the wheels. Low fluid, air in the system, or internal pump/motor wear can all cause weak or no drive. Some transmissions can be serviced (fluid flush, filter replacement); others require a rebuild or replacement unit.

Getting a Reliable Diagnosis

These three causes — bypass valve, belt, and transmission — each require different repairs at very different costs. Diagnosing which one is causing your problem before ordering parts saves time and money.
