Why Won't My Riding Lawn Mower Start?
A riding mower may fail to start because of a weak battery, an unmet safety-interlock condition, a starter-circuit fault, stale fuel or an ignition problem. The first distinction is whether the engine does not turn, turns slowly or turns normally without firing. That observation prevents chasing fuel problems when the real issue is in the starting circuit.

Confirm the normal start conditions
Park on level ground, set the parking brake and turn the PTO off. Follow the manual for seat, pedal, neutral and choke positions; these differ between tractors and zero-turns. Safety interlocks intentionally prevent unsafe starts. A damaged switch can fail, but never bypass it, tape it closed or jump the starter to defeat the system. Keep people and pets clear and run the engine only outdoors.
No crank or slow crank
A click without cranking may involve battery charge, corroded connections, a solenoid or starter fault, and occasionally an engine that cannot turn freely. Dashboard lights do not prove the battery can handle starting current. Check visible terminal condition with the ignition off, using the manual's battery precautions. Load testing and voltage-drop tests are more useful than replacing parts on speculation. Stop if cables overheat or the battery is damaged.
Cranks normally but will not fire
Confirm usable fuel, the fuel shutoff if fitted and the prescribed choke setting. Gasoline left over a long storage period can contribute to blocked carburetor passages; injected engines have different fuel-delivery checks. A fouled plug or damaged plug lead can also prevent ignition. Do not spray starting fluid into an unfamiliar engine, repeatedly over-prime it or test exposed spark near gasoline.
What changed before the failure?
Tell the shop about storage, washing, battery replacement, hitting an object or a recent repair. A mower that stopped abruptly while mowing needs a different investigation from one that simply did not restart after winter. Check accessible wiring and intake areas for nesting only when shut down and cool. Never reach under the deck or turn blades by hand as part of a starting test.
Prevent repeated no-starts and book safely
Follow fuel-storage instructions, use the appropriate battery maintainer and keep the scheduled engine service current. Repeated failures, fuel leaks, unusual noises or a starter that strains need diagnosis before another attempt.
