Why Is My ATV or Side-by-Side Losing Power?
Loss of power in an ATV or side-by-side may come from an engine that cannot make power or a driveline that cannot transmit it. Fuel restriction, ignition faults, dirty filtration, overheating and belt problems are common possibilities. Whether engine speed falls, rises without vehicle speed, or changes only after warming up is more informative than replacing parts based on one symptom.

Stop before a warning becomes damage
Stop safely for an overheating warning, oil-pressure warning, fuel leak, severe misfire or burning smell. Continuing can turn a repairable issue into engine or clutch damage. Do not remove a hot coolant cap or reach near a rotating clutch. Let the machine cool and follow the manual's warning procedure. If it cannot travel safely, arrange transport rather than attempting repeated full-throttle tests.
Engine bogging versus belt slip
If engine speed drops as load rises, fuel delivery, air supply, ignition or a dragging load may need checking. If revs rise but road speed does not, a belt or clutch issue is possible on CVT-equipped machines. A selected low-power mode, incorrect gear range or applied brake can also affect performance. Confirm normal controls and load limits before assuming internal damage.
Fuel, filters and ignition under load
A restricted filter or fuel supply can pass enough for light use but not climbing or acceleration. Water-contaminated fuel, an intake obstruction or a plug fault may feel similar. Check accessible filters and hoses only with the engine off using the manual. Injection pressure tests and diagnosis of ignition breakdown require proper equipment. Avoid changing carburetor adjustments or fitting a pump without evidence.
Heat and CVT condition
Blocked radiator fins, a fan problem or incorrect coolant level can trigger reduced-power protection on some models. A CVT belt may slip after wear, contamination or water entry. Replacing the belt without finding the source can repeat the failure. Do not run a CVT with its cover off to observe it; a technician can check specified belt condition, clutch function and cooling paths safely.
Give the shop a useful history
Note cold versus hot behavior, warning messages, fuel age, recent service, towing loads and whether the problem followed mud or water exposure. Prevent recurrence with the severe-use schedule when applicable, clean cooling passages and correct operating range.
